We want you to meet Brooklyn. This fiesty and prescious beautiful girl had a kidney transplant in July of 2022 at only two years of age, but you would never know it seeing her today. Brooklyn developed Congenital Nephrotic Syndrome which according to Johns Hopkins is "an herited disorder characterized by protein in the urine and swelling of the body which develops shorlty after birth. The disorder commonly results in infection, malnutrition and kidney failure." In short, her kidneys are unable to keep protein in her body which her body needs to function, grow, become strong and ward off infections.

Scott and I were honored to be invited to photograph the marking of the one year anniversary Brooklyn's transplant. More importantly, to honor the young lady who lost her life and her family members that had to make the most difficult decision during a tragic time to give the gift of life by donating her organs. Brooklyns' parents, Marlee and Jared, chose to release a dozen butterflies in honor of the donor while surrounded by family.

Brooklyn is now thriving with her new kidney so much that she grew two inches in the month of July and has started preschool. She has an amazing vocabulary and is always on the move. Her bright personality brings a smile to everyone's face.

Butterflies have become a symbol of hope, transformation and rememberance for many in the organ donor and recipient community. Now that you can see what the gift of life through organ donation can do please consider becoming an organ donor yourself. Scott and I have registered to be organ donors and we encourage you to join the movement by going to donatelifeky and registering today. Time to spread your wings and fly.
